Boys at Papplewick School have once again been awarded a coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction.

The Eco-Schools Green Flag is an international accreditation that recognises efforts to raise environmental awareness amongst young people, whilst taking action to make the school more sustainable. Papplewick has now retained its status as an accredited Eco-School, following their achievement for the 2023 academic year.

The Eco-Schools programme was established in 1994 and is now delivered in more than 70 countries across the globe. The programme prompts young people to explore a variety of environmental issues, including climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Pupils are then empowered to plan and deliver environmental actions in their school, local community, and beyond.

Since Papplewick, Ascot began working towards an Eco-Schools Green Flag after Covid, achievements have included the Bronze, Silver and Green Flag accreditations.

This year, boys and staff have tirelessly worked through the school curriculum addressing the various eco-schools topics. Papplewick have built on these strong foundations, collaborating with the eco club to work on three Eco-Schools topics: Waste, Energy and Litter. They then planned a variety of projects including developing a compost area within the school grounds and how to make the school more recycling friendly as well as revamping the schools’ bugs hotel.

Headmaster, Tom Bunbury said 'This is such a key factor in every area of our lives and I am proud of how the boys are so thoughtful about their environment and the planet - and also  the staff who support them in their endeavours - it is very much our school policy to address these matters.

Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: “The Eco-Schools Green Flag award is an internationally recognised symbol of high environmental standards. The pupils and school staff that earn the award deserve immense credit for their hard work, determination, and creativity. Their passion for protecting our planet is an inspiration to us all. ”
