On Tuesday 4th September, the new intake of Year 7 students began their first academic term at Charters School in Sunningdale. With students in other years starting term the following day, the Year 11 Prefect Mentors were able to show the younger students around the school site and answer any of their questions.

The school runs a vast array of extra-curricular clubs and during the afternoon the students were able to find out about the exciting variety of activities on offer at the Freshers Fayre.

Alongside the obvious PE and Sports clubs were the less obvious, such as fencing, trampolining, and squash.  In addition, students could join Robotics, Science, Music & Film Clubs to name but a few.

Headteacher Mr Richard Pilgrim said, “One of the things we are most proud about at Charters is the extensive range of extra-curricular activities we offer our students.  Participating in the wider life of the school is crucial to a rich and rounded education and it is often through these activities that we see our pupils maturing and developing as young people which has a significant knock-on effect for their progress in lessons.”

All the pupils had a fantastic time and were spoiled for choice with the clubs available.  Most children signed up for a club and were very excited to be at Charters School.

Radnor House Surgery & Ascot Medical Centre now offers a 21st century method of consulting a GP. I tried it and found it to be pleasanter, quicker and much more satisfactory, than a traditional consultation!

On their website Home page, click on the blue strip ‘Consult Our Doctors Online

You’ll be offered a wide range of conditions to click on. Or type your condition into the Search box and more detailed options will appear. I typed in rash and the drop-down menu offered me ‘hives’,   ‘urticaria’ and so on . This was very helpful and you feel you're getting somewhere quickly.

At this point we are also offered three options on what kind of consultation we’re seeking:

This is an example of how very well designed this system is. At an early stage, the doctor knows what the patient is trying to get out of the consultation. (It might be an idea to state this up front, in face to face consultations?)

Charters School students and staff have achieved a marvellous set of GCSE results this year with 243 students completing their exams.

Overall, 82% achieved 5 or more standard passes (grade level 9-4) including English and Mathematics. 41% of all entries were awarded at grade level 7 or above, the equivalent of an old GCSE A and above. 14% of entries were at grade level 8 (the equivalent of an A*) and 9% were at the new grade level 9 which rewards attainment above the A* grade.

Co-Headteachers Martyn Parker and Richard Pilgrim said, “We are delighted with these results which are a step-up from the very good outcomes in 2017. Students across the ability range have demonstrated great success. Our initial analysis indicates that across all subjects, on average, our students have achieved at least half a grade better than students of similar academic ability nationally.  We are very proud of them and the support given by our teaching and associate staff at a time when the examinations are more demanding.”

This is particularly significant against the backdrop of tougher qualifications and real terms funding cuts of 20% in school sixth forms.
